The Definition of Public
Public – is a special public relations term used to define the type of audience to which a PR campaign is directed.
Public in PR is not the same as ‘public’ in the dictionary which means the general public. There are many different publics when it comes to PR.
For example, an apparel company may have a skater public and a basketball public and an MMA public. Each of these publics will have different ideas, viewpoints and tastes. A PR person understands that communications must be tailored to specific publics. The reason PR and marketing campaigns fail is that messaging is not tailored and so it just doesn’t hit home.
Public Relations and marketing, to be effective, must target the right publics or target market.
