There is no doubt that website design prices in South Africa are highly variable. Depending on the complexity and functionality required, website project specifications and thus price will be different from company to company.

Understanding the factors that go into determining pricing can help businesses make informed decisions when selecting a website design company that will meet their needs and budget.

In this article, we will explore some of the key factors that impact website design prices in South Africa. We’ll also offer suggestions for selecting a quality website design company that can design your website according to your specifications while also being affordable for your business.

Factors that Affect Website Design Prices in South Africa

Several factors influence website design prices in South Africa, including the complexity of the site, the experience and expertise of the designer, the timeline and project requirements, and especially the desired functionality and features.

Website design prices are not regulated and website specifications can differ enormously from website to website. This makes it difficult to determine how much a website should cost.

Additionally, the level of customization required, the size of the website, the type of hosting and ongoing maintenance required, as well as the need for logo and content creation, can also impact website design costs. As a business owner or organization looking to invest in a website, it’s essential to understand these factors and work with a reputable designer to develop a plan for a website that meets your needs and budget.

The specifications of a website can vary infinitely. Every website is different and thus website design prices in South Africa will vary just as much as any other country.

When investing in a new website design, the first step should always be to decide on the functionality and features needed on the website. Website design and development normally come after functionality except where the functionality is very simple.

1. Website Functionality & Features

A website’s features and functionality are crucial to its success. Without well-designed and intuitive features, users may struggle to navigate the site and find the information they need.

Additionally, a website’s functionality can impact its ability to perform tasks and achieve its goals. As such, it is important to carefully consider and plan out features and functionality when developing or redesigning a website.

When it comes to website design prices, the functionality of your website and how you intent to use it is the biggest factor.

Business & Lead Generation Websites

Here is a list of some common features and functionality of lead generation websites that will affect website design prices in South Africa.

  • Lead Capture Forms – Used to collect information from potential customers, such as their name and contact details. These forms are designed to encourage website visitors to engage with a company by providing their information in exchange for something of value, such as a free eBook or newsletter subscription. They are often placed on landing pages or pop-ups, and can be customized to ask for specific information that the business wants to collect. Once a visitor submits their information, it is stored in a database and can be used to follow up with that lead through email marketing or sales calls. Lead capture forms are an important tool for businesses looking to generate new leads and grow their customer base.
  • Landing Pages & Sales Funnels – Landing pages and sales funnels are two closely related marketing tools used to increase conversions and sales. A landing page is a standalone web page created to capture the attention of visitors and encourage them to take a specific action, such as filling out a contact form or making a purchase. The landing page generally serves as the entry point to a sales funnel, which is a series of web pages and automated messages that guide visitors through a process designed to convert them into customers. The goal of a sales funnel is to nurture and persuade the visitors to take action while providing them with valuable information and resources to make an informed decision. Landing pages and sales funnels can be used in a variety of marketing campaigns and are particularly effective for lead generation, product launches, and e-commerce sales.
  • CRM (Customer Relationship Management) – Customer Relationship Management (CRM) is a software system designed to help businesses manage interactions with customers. CRMs allow organizations to streamline and automate customer engagement, sales, and marketing efforts in order to improve efficiency and build stronger relationships with customers. These systems store customer data and enable users to track communication history, identify patterns and trends, and generate reports and analyses to inform business decisions. By centralizing customer data, businesses can better understand individual preferences, needs, and behaviors, and tailor their interactions accordingly. Overall, CRMs can enhance customer satisfaction, improve customer retention rates, and drive revenue growth by maximizing the value of each customer relationship.

eCommerce Websites with online payment facilities

Essential eCommerce features and functionality that affects website design costs and rates.

  • eCommerce System – An ecommerce system is a digital platform that allows businesses to sell products or services online. It typically includes an online storefront where customers can browse and purchase items, a shopping cart to manage their purchases, and a secure payment system to process transactions. The system may also include features such as inventory management, order fulfillment, and customer support tools.
  • Payment Gateways – Payment gateways are online platforms that facilitate the transfer of funds from a customer’s bank account or credit card to a merchant’s account. In simpler terms, these gateways connect the buyers and sellers by securely processing the transactions between them. Payment gateways enable the acceptance of various payment methods, such as credit/debit cards, digital wallets, bank transfers, and others. They work by encrypting sensitive information, protecting it against fraudulent activities during the payment process. Payment gateways are especially useful for e-commerce businesses, as they allow customers to make secure online purchases using their preferred payment method. Popular South African payment gateway providers include Yoco, PayFast and PayGate.
  • Shipping & Delivery Management – Shipping and delivery management plugins are tools used by ecommerce businesses to efficiently manage the process of shipping and delivering products to customers. These plugins integrate with ecommerce platforms such as WooCommerce, Shopify, and Magento to provide real-time shipping rates, tracking information, and inventory management. They enable businesses to set shipping rates based on weight or destination, print shipping labels and packing slips, and generate shipping reports for analysis. Additionally, they offer a range of delivery options, including express, same-day, and scheduled delivery.
  • CRM (Customer Relationship Management)(See previous description above)
  • Accounting Software Integration – These are plugins that can be added to eCommerce websites to improve their functionality when dealing with online sales and transactions. These plugins allow online retailers to efficiently manage their accounting activities and streamline their financial processes. They can connect with various ecommerce platforms, such as Shopify, WooCommerce, and Magento, and allow businesses to synchronize their data and track sales, inventory, and cash flow automatically. ECommerce accounting software plugins also offer features such as automated tax calculation, invoice generation, and financial reporting, which can save time and reduce the risk of errors. By integrating these plugins into their accounting software, businesses can have better control over their financial transactions, and ensure efficient management of their ecommerce operations.

eLearning Websites that offer online courses

Learning management system features and functionality that influences website design projects rates.

  • Learning Management System – A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application or plugin designed to help organizations manage and deliver online educational courses and training programs. LMS platforms are designed to provide a streamlined and centralized learning system, making it easier for educators and trainers to create, administer, and evaluate courses and learning materials. A typical LMS offers features such as course creation, learning delivery, content management, assessment and grading, communication tools, and reporting. LMS platforms are used in a variety of settings, including education and training fields, human resources departments, and corporate training programs.
  • eCommerce Features – (See previous description above)

Membership Websites with access controls

Here some core features and functionality of membership and community websites that will play a role in determining the website design prices charged by your web designer.

These plugins can help by limiting access to certain parts of the website, allowing specific users to view pages, downloads, and other exclusive content. Admins can create custom user roles, set up membership levels, and assign different permissions to each individual user or group of users.
  • eCommerce Features – (See previous description above)

Directory Websites with listing features

Key features and functionality of directory or listings websites that will affect web design prices.

  • Directory Software – A directory website plugin is a software add-on that can be installed on a website to enable the display and organization of a large number of listings. The plugin works by creating a database that stores all the information about each listing, such as location, contact information, and details about the product or service. It also provides a search function that allows users to find a specific listing based on certain criteria. With the plugin, website owners can create categories and subcategories to organize their listings into manageable sections. They can also customize the fields displayed for each listing and add images to enhance the presentation.

It allows you to create portfolio pages, which typically include images or videos of your work, along with descriptions and other relevant details. You can customize the layout and appearance of your portfolio pages to match your website’s overall style. Portfolio plugins also often include filtering options, so visitors can easily search for specific types of work or categories.
Common Website Features

  • Contact Form
  • Social Links and Social Sharing Buttons
  • Google Maps Integration
  • Chat System
  • Email Marketing Integration
  • Website Analytics Integration
Advanced Website Features

Some popular advanced website functionality that will affect website design prices includes the following:

  • Advanced SEO Tools
  • Website Security Tools
  • Website Speed Optimization Tools
  • Events Calendar
  • Advanced forms with calculations
  • Privacy & Cookie Management

2. Website Development

Website design prices in South Africa are greatly influenced by the development process. Before your web designer can create a design, they must first understand the requirements and specifications of the website. This means that the cost of your website will be influenced by the amount of work required in the development phase. For example, a website that requires content management systems, e-commerce functionality, or complex integrations will require more development time and effort, thus resulting in a higher cost of design.

The type of technology required for the website also plays a significant role in website design pricing. A custom developed website built with modern technologies such as advanced CSS, HTML5, and JavaScript will require development expertise, which can lead to higher pricing. Additionally, the more functions a website needs, the more expensive it will be to design since each function or feature often needs its own user interface elements.

3. Website Design & Layout

The visual look and layouts of a website’s pages can vary enormously from website to website and thus the scope of the design work needed will affect the price. Here are some key website design areas that affect website design prices:

Mobile Responsive Website Design

Mobile responsive website design can significantly impact the pricing of a website. A responsive website means that the website is designed to be accessible and viewable on any device, such as desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Mobile responsive website design prices in South Africa also vary according to the degree of responsive optimization.

Websites that are not mobile responsive can have usability issues on smaller screens, which can negatively affect the user experience. Thus, a website with a responsive design takes more time and effort to build, increasing the cost of design. However, the benefits of a responsive website design are numerous, such as better accessibility, improved search engine rankings, increased user engagement and higher conversion.

As a result, responsive design is generally considered a necessity and companies with larger design budgets will tend to invest in higher levels of optimization.

Conversion Optimized Design

Conversion optimized website design can have a significant impact on pricing. A website that is optimized for conversion is designed with the ultimate goal of turning visitors into customers. This means that the design elements, website copy, and user experience are all tailored to maximize the likelihood of a visitor making a purchase or taking a desired action.

The impact on pricing comes from the fact that a website designed for conversion will be a more effective sales tool than a poorly designed website and naturally requires more thought and effort to design. A website that is optimized for conversion will generate more leads, more sales, and higher revenue and is thus also more valuable than a website without the same optimization.

While website design prices that include conversion optimization may be higher, the improved conversion rates normally pay for the extra cost many times over.

Using Website Templates

Templates are pre-designed website layouts that can be customized with content, imagery, and branding specific to the client’s needs. Since templates are pre-designed, they require less time and effort to implement, reducing development costs for the web developer and thus website design prices tend to be lower.

As a result, clients who opt for a website built with a template will typically pay less than those who require a fully custom website design. However, it is important to note that templates may not fully meet all the client’s requirements, and customization may still be necessary, which may increase the cost.

Ultimately, the pricing of a website built with a template will depend on factors such as the complexity of the customization, the size of the website, and the level of functionality required.

Choosing Custom Website Design

Custom website design usually entails a higher pricing compared to using pre-made templates. This is because creating a custom design requires more time, effort, and skill on the part of the web designer.

A custom web design involves understanding the brand’s specific needs and goals as well as their market and customers. Then a designer, or team of designers, has to create unique tailor-made web page layouts, graphics and for large websites, advanced templating systems.

This process demands additional resources and expertise, which results in a higher production cost. Additionally, custom-designed websites are usually built from scratch, which can require wireframes, concept layouts, mood boards and more, effectively increasing the complexity of the project.

Custom website design pricing, therefore, varies according to the project requirements and can be more costly compared to standard or template websites. However, a custom-designed website offers more control, flexibility, and enables brands to set themselves apart from competitors, ultimately offering value for money.

Custom website design prices in South Africa will vary from web designer to web design agency based on the specifications of your website.

4. Number of Webpages (Website Size)

The number of web pages on a website is an important factor that can affect the pricing of a website. The more pages a website has, the more time, effort, and resources it will take to design and populate each web page with content and graphics. This means that the price of the website will likely be higher.

However, it’s important to note that pricing based on the number of pages can vary depending on the website’s complexity, the type of content, and the functionality required. A website with a small number of pages but complex functionality or custom coding will cost more than a website with a larger number of simpler pages.

The number of web pages is a key factor that determines website design prices charged by web designers and agencies.

5. Website Content Requirements

The content requirements of a website can also greatly affect its pricing. Here are some key areas where content can affect your projects website design prices:

Website Branding

Small businesses often devalue brand design when it comes to their websites and typically only worry about the size and placement of their logo and some basic colour usage.

Larger more established brands often have established branding guidelines and they may even have a brand manual that includes specific brand usage guidelines for their website.

The more extensive the branding requirements are and strictness to adhere to guidelines, styles, font choices etc., the more likely the price of the website will be affected.

That said, the consistency and perceived quality of the website will also be greater.

Website Graphic Design

Website graphic design plays a significant role in determining the pricing of a website. The cost of designing a website can vary depending on the complexity of elements such as banners, backgrounds, icons, overlays and more.

Websites with unique and complex graphics will generally cost more than websites that rely on templates or pre-existing designs.

Website Photos & Images

Customers rely on visuals to determine the value of a product or service. High-quality images of a product or service can attract potential customers and create a positive impression of your brand while also creating an emotional effect.

Low-quality or poorly lit images can create a negative perception of the brand and decrease the perceived value of the product.

Thus, where higher quality images are required, this can impact the cost of a website design as photography services or high quality stock images may be required. Image editing and file size optimization will also be factors that can affect the pricing.

Website Copywriting

Including website copywriting services will typically affect web design pricing. Having professional copywriters on board means that the website will have clear and effective messaging that will attract and engage users. This can result in more conversions and an overall better user experience but it requires additional time and effort and thus will typically add fees.

The cost can vary depending on the extent of copy needed, the experience level of the copywriter and the time needed to thoroughly understand and research the business and its goals. It is important to consider the value of professional copywriting and weigh the benefits against the added expense when budgeting for web design projects.

6. Website Software Used

The choice of website design software used to design your website will also influence the cost of setting up and designing your website.

Free Website Design Software

At SME Rocket, we use WordPress as the foundation for all our websites. WordPress is incredibly powerful and it can be customized with over 50 000 different plugins. Best of all, it is completely free to use.

That said, while WordPress itself is free and many of the plugins are also free, there is still a cost, unless you are designing your website yourself.

As with all software, there is a learning curve. We’ve spent many years learning about WordPress and the plugins that are available. Depending on the complexity of your website, a considerable amount of time may be needed to do design work, install and configure plugins and settings and ensure your website runs smoothly.

While we won’t be charging for website software, we do have to charge for our production time, experience and supporting services.

The larger and more complex your website is the more we have to charge and this goes for any other website designer.

Paid Website Design Software

While most websites can start off with free website design software, there are times when paid software is required.

In the case of WordPress, this paid software takes the form of paid plugins.

Plugins are software packages that add additional features and functionality to websites. While there are thousands of free plugins available, very often these are either limited in terms of their features or suitability.

Paid plugins on the other hand tend to offer more advanced features and because they are well supported due to the yearly license fees that are required to use them they also tend to be high quality and play well with other plugins.

Where your website requires features or functionality that is only available in a paid plugin, this will add to the investment needed to build your website.

7. Website Performance Requirements

Website performance requirements play a crucial role in the overall design and development process of a website. The performance of a website depends on various factors such as loading speed, accessibility, and user experience.

Meeting these requirements can significantly impact the cost of website design. For example, designing a website with fast loading times requires optimization of image sizes and website code, not to mention page layout optimization, especially on mobile devices.

Additionally, implementing features to improve user engagement and experience involves using advanced technologies and customization, which can also increase the design cost. Therefore, the higher the performance requirements, the higher the website design prices will be in order to meet those requirements effectively.

8. Website Security & Maintenance

While website maintenance and security tend to be ongoing website costs, the inclusion or exclusion of these items can still affect up front web design costs.

Website Security Costs

If website security is important to your brand then no doubt including website security features in the initial design is going to be a priority and thus add to the price of your web design package.

For those who choose not to include website security, the initial cost may be avoided but a future website hack could end up costing in terms of finances and reputation.

Website Maintenance & Support Costs

A well thought out website often takes into account the need to scale and manage content. For example, if you are planning on having a website with hundreds of web pages, it is a good idea to design a global page template that will apply the same layout to each page even if the content differs somewhat. This makes maintenance and design changes much easier to do than if each page was individually designed.

Thoughtful website planning could save on both upfront and ongoing costs while lack of planning may actually be more costly as is often the case when trying to take shortcuts.

Additionally, the more complex a website’s design or functionality is, the more maintenance and support is likely to cost. This is why it is important to only include features that really are needed and avoid overdoing design work.

Once again, a little bit of website planning on consultation with an experienced web design can save you a lot of money.

9. Website Project Timeline

A website design project timeline can significantly impact the website design prices charged by your web design or agency.

Typically, longer timelines mean higher costs because they require more planning, development, and testing time from the website design team.

A rushed timeline may be less expensive upfront, but it could lead to a subpar end product, necessitating costly modifications and redesigns down the line. On the other hand, a prolonged timeline allows for more extensive user testing, quality assurance, and customization for the client’s specific needs.

Additionally, a well-structured timeline can aid in budgeting and resource allocation, allowing the website design team to complete the project on time and on budget. In summary, a comprehensive and realistic timeline is crucial in determining the website’s setup costs.

10. Website Project Planning & Scope

The scope of a website design project is a crucial factor that will contribute to the setup cost. A project scope outlines the website’s functionality, design elements, and content requirements.

A larger website scope with many features and pages will require more time, resources, and effort in terms of design and development, resulting in a higher setup cost. In contrast, a smaller scope website with more limited requirements may be less time-consuming and will result in a lower setup cost.

Additionally, if the website requires custom development work, such as integrating payment systems or complex forms, the cost will likely increase.

Thus, as a website owner you must define your project scope in consultation with your web designer to ensure that your website’s setup cost aligns with your budget and business requirements.

11. Web Designer Experience

Another factor that will affect the price of your website is your website designer’s level of experience.

A more experienced designer will typically charge a higher rate, but will also have a better understanding of the design process and the necessary steps to create a website that is both visually appealing and functional. They will also have more advanced technical skills, which means that they can create more complex and sophisticated websites that are tailored to your needs.

In contrast, a less experienced web designer may not have the necessary skills or knowledge, and may take longer to complete the project, increasing the overall cost. Ultimately, the designer’s experience will dictate the quality and efficiency of the final product, which should be a primary consideration when determining the value of their services.

12. Web Design Salary & Rates

Whether you are hiring a freelancer or an agency, there are many costs that have to be taken into account including web designer’s salaries and wages. Like any business, there are operating expenses which include equipment, office rent, utilities, advertising, software licenses and more.

The price of your website design has to be high enough to make designing it viable. Super cheap web design companies typically do not pay well, nor do they invest in improving their products and services and businesses. This leads to poor quality work which can actually cost you more when you end up having to get your website redesigned due to it being of poor quality.

It is important to look for a web design company that is neither the cheapest nor the most expensive as here you can typically find the sweet spot when it comes to fair pricing and good quality design work.

Website Design Salaries & Rates

According to Indeed.com, the average salary for a web designer is R 12 688 p/m. Payscale.com indicates the average salary of a South African web design is around R 16 916 p/m.

Website Developer Salary & Rates

Web developer salaries are similar to web designer salaries. Indeed.com says average developer salaries in South Africa are R 18 519 p/m which is higher than designers. Payscale.com suggests developer salaries are R 14 980 p/m which is lower than their designer salary data.

Salaries of course will vary according to experience, city as well as specific design or development skills. And this goes for freelancers and agencies too.

You can imagine how many websites a designer would need to design each month if they only charge R 500 – R 1000 per site. The chances of receiving a quality site that has not been rushed are pretty slim.

Website Design Package Prices

Another factor that impacts website design prices in South Africa is how website design packages are structured.

There are four ways to structure a package. These include monthly pricing, once-ff pricing, annual pricing and hourly pricing. Let’s take a look at each one.

Monthly Website Design Packages

Website design packages that are priced monthly work very much like car or office rentals in that you pay for as long as you use the website.

This type of package typically includes additional benefits such as monthly maintenance, security and support services.

The main benefit of monthly pricing is that there is no large capital outlay and your website gets looked after and maintained.

The downside is that you don’t actually own your website as you are paying for it for as long as you use it.

Monthly website pricing is a great option if you plan on adding to your website regularly and security and maintenance and having a helping hand on call is important to you.

As with any pricing options, beware of prices that seem too low, there is usually a catch or a quality and performance trade-off.

Once-Off Website Design Package

Once-off web design pricing means you pay for your website in full and thus you own your website*.

Once-off website design packages can be paid with one payment in full but most often they are split into two or three payments depending on the size and scope of the website and how long it will take to build.

Paying for your website upfront usually means a larger financial investment but without any monthly tie in unless you opt for a separate monthly maintenance plan.

Monthly maintenance however, will usually be on a month-to-month basis and canceling it won’t lead to you not being able to use your website as is the case with monthly website plans.

Many individuals and companies prefer not to be tied in and thus once-off website payments are preferred.

*Please note, as most websites these days use licensed software there will always be some ownership limitations when it comes to your website’s code or plugins.

Annual Website Design Pricing

Annual website pricing is another option, though it is rare. In most cases it will work the same as a monthly plan but paid upfront for a year. This would normally result in a small saving equivalent to one or two months depending on how the plan is structured.

Web Design at Hourly Rates

Hourly website design and development rates are most commonly used by larger website agencies who are engaged in larger projects where extensive custom design and development work is required.

Hourly rates are used where it is difficult to price a project due to its size or requirements may change or vary during the project.

Hourly website pricing will normally be for websites costing several hundred thousand rand or even a R 1 million plus with work taking 6 months or more.

Website Design Pricing Comparison Tables

The below table compares website design packages & prices from 56 South African web design companies and agencies. The pricing information was taken from publicly available pricing available on each provider’s website.

The actual web design packages and website specifications vary a lot from design to designer and due to the wide range of variations it really is not possible to compare pricing for websites with the exact same specifications.

We did however gather data to at least compare the prices of a 5 page website design as almost all web design companies surveyed offer a 5 page web design package.

From the survey data we found that on average, website design prices in South Africa for a 5 page website design are R 6 254. The average monthly web design package is R 399 p/m and the average eCommerce website design price is R8 445. The average monthly web hosting fee is R 107 p/m with average hourly rates being around R 500 p/hr.

Website Design Prices in South Africa – 2024 Agency Survey Data Table

Affordable Website Design Packages

The most affordable website design package in South Africa costs only R 399 with the lowest monthly web design package coming in at R 180 p/m.

While price wise these might be the cheapest websites in South Africa, there is no way of determining the quality of the work. Websites are one of those products where you get out what you put in.

The biggest danger with cheap website design is that you will end up with a website that is so poorly built and designed that you will soon have to buy a new website.

If you just want a website as a basic brochure and you don’t care about getting found on Google or converting traffic into leads and sales then perhaps a super cheap website will work for you so long as the design is not so bad that it harms your reputation.

In most cases, the most affordable website design package is one that will get you a good quality website that is usable and looks good and will serve you for years to come. This typically comes at a higher cost and requires regular maintenance and investment. However, this is also a website that can actually make you money rather than just costing you money.

Website Design Prices Johannesburg

Web design rates in South Africa vary quite a bit from city to city.

Web design prices in Johannesburg for a 5 page website average R 7 007 with starting prices for web design packages starting at R 900 and going up to R 40 800. This makes Johannesburg a more affordable option when compared to Cape Town web design prices.

While our data did include web design agencies from around South Africa, we found most designers are located in Johannesburg and Cape Town and surrounds. As such we didn’t tabulate average website rates for other cities as the number of companies were too few.

Website Design Prices Cape Town

Website design prices in Cape Town range between R 799 – R 40 800 with an average of R 9 441 for a 5 page website. This makes Cape Town the most expensive city to invest in a website.

Conclusion

We tried to gather as much data as we could when it comes to website design prices in South Africa to provide you with an accurate idea of what SA’s web designers charge.

Naturally, not all designers and agencies are transparent with their rates which makes it impossible to get the most accurate figures. That said, our data does provide some useful insights.
